Discovery Center Will Launch at Water’s Edge
October 13, 2020 – Today Northeastern Maryland is one step closer to being home to a major regional science center. The Board of Directors of the APG Discovery Center signed a lease to locate the facility at the Water’s Edge business complex in Belcamp, Maryland. The Discovery Center will occupy a one-story building that fronts Route 40 Pulaski Highway and backs up to the Bush River.
The facility will be undergoing renovations and the Discovery Center board expects to occupy the space on July 1, 2021, and open a temporary Preview Center, where people can get a taste of the types of exhibits and activities that will be available at the permanent Discovery Center, which is planned for 2022.
When completed, the APG Discovery Center will be an interactive and multi-dimensional facility providing a range of exhibitions and programs that inspire the joy of discovery in students of all ages. The facility will include interactive exhibits, hands-on technology, a laboratory, classrooms, an auditorium, Maker Space, and multi-purpose spaces where traveling exhibits from other science centers can be hosted. In addition to hosting 100,000 visitors and tourists annually, we will host after-school and summer science programming. Active and retired scientists, college students, and teachers will offer tutoring and mentoring to students. The Discovery Center will serve as a regional hub for STEM activity and an important building block in the tourism ecosystem.
