Discovery Center’s Magic of Science Fair and Family Festival Attracts Over 4,000 Attendees
(Belcamp, MD) –The Discovery Center at Water’s Edge hosted its annual Magic of Science Festival on June 10, attracting over 4,000 attendees for a day of interactive science exploration. The free event featured activities for learners of all ages, from infants to adults, and was held on the grounds of the Towson University in Northeastern Maryland (TUNE) building at Harford Community College.
The Family Science Festival included over 50 interactive science exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Families explored the physics of flight, went inside a virtual laboratory, flew drones, and experimented with Algae. The “Kids Zone” play area was filled with many activities for toddlers and preschoolers to explore basic science concepts in an open-ended, unstructured environment.
A highlight of the festival was the Middle School Science Fair, sponsored by the Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union (APGFCU), which showcased projects from 45 students in grades 6 through 8 from across the region. Students presented their original scientific research and experiments to judges and the public. The top projects in each grade received awards and prizes.
“Events like the Magic of Science Festival are so important for sparking curiosity in people of all backgrounds,” said Charles J. Nietubicz, Board President of the Discovery Center. “We aim to make science accessible and exciting for anyone in the community. The creativity and passion we saw from participants this weekend shows how eager people are to learn about the world around them.”
The Magic of Science Festival is the Discovery Center’s largest annual event, with activities and performances spanning the Towson University in Northeastern Maryland campus. The event is made possible through partnerships with organizations like SURVICE Engineering, LufCo, APGFCU, as well as over 100 volunteers from the local community.
“This is a great event that brings the community together,” said Jeff Foulk, CEO of SURVICE Engineering, presenting sponsor of the Magic of Science event. “As an engineering firm, SURVICE’s continued success is dependent on new generations of youth pursuing STEM careers. SURVICE is involved in the Magic of Science and the Discovery Center at Water’s Edge because inspiring the next generation is critical to our region’s future.”
“As a founding sponsor of the Discovery Center at Water’s Edge, APGFCU is pleased to extend its support to the Magic of Science Festival’s science fair again this year. The focus on youth aligns with our mission to empower people with knowledge to improve their financial well-being and foster generational wealth building. We believe the foundation of financial success starts with nurturing the potential of our youth and families. That’s why we dedicate substantial resources to promoting financial literacy in schools, community organizations, and through our youth savings programs.” – Brian Wilcox, Chief Marketing Officer, APGFCU.
In addition to SURVICE, APGFCU, and LufCo, the Magic of Science was supported and underwritten by DSA, Harford County Chamber of Commerce, Harford Community College, Frito Lay, Klein’s Shoprite, Emerald Technical Solutions, Upper Chesapeake Health, Towson University, Route 40 Business Association, Northeastern Maryland Technology Council, WHFC, Weis Markets, and Mix 106.5.
