Community Forum to Address Equity and Inclusion in STEM September 20

The Discovery Center will be an interactive regional science and technology facility designed to engage visitors in an unstructured exploration of all things science. It will be located just off I95 at The Water’s Edge complex on Route 40 near Route 543.

Informal science – meaning science activities that take place outside of the formal classroom – plays an enormously important role in developing a young person’s capacity for learning and inquiry. Research indicates that informal science experiences significantly impact whether students pursue STEM subjects and careers. These studies also show that women, minorities, the economically disadvantaged, and individuals with differing abilities are far less likely to engage in STEM opportunities. In fact, instead of erasing equity gaps in education, informal science experiences can worsen the inequity by enriching those who are already succeeding in school and society. However, by carefully designing its diversity and inclusion program, the Discovery Center hopes to inspire and nurture a new generation of passionate scientists from all backgrounds and abilities.

Because the forum will be an interactive dialogue, attendees will have the opportunity to provide input into the Discovery Center’s designs and programs. All are encouraged to attend, but registration is required. Register: https://edia.eventbrite.com.
